What if every child had the chance to learn a musical instrument?
British Politician Jeremy Corbyn, during a general election campaign, gave his “eve-of-evolution” speech in Colwyn Bay, north Wales, United Kingdom. Promising to give every child the chance to learn an instrument.
Finland has one of the best education systems in the world, where teaching music and learning to play an instrument are the foundation of children’s schooling.
The system is centered around the idea that a child is never too young to start a relationship with music; Instead of feeling like a chore, creative play is the key, and this musical exploration will feed into other disciplines. Children are allowed to develop at their own pace and go into music as deeply as they wish.
Finland’s education system is extremely successful, and has produced a stream of extraordinary musicians over the past 30 years.
Of course, not every child will become a musical superstar, and some may even give up on music. But, as Corbyn says, every child should be given the opportunity. Integrating music more directly into education can improve a child’s life and creativity.
