Proximity Learning’s certified teachers are passionate about their work. They all interact with their students in meaningful ways to build relationships, strengthen communication, and enhance social emotional learning while meeting academic milestones. Read on to learn more about our expert teachers.

Stephanie Winfrey

Virtual teacher Stephanie Winfrey is her students’ biggest cheerleader - both in academics, extracurriculars and life in general. She supports her students’ social-emotional learning as whole people because she understands the importance of a reliable teacher-student relationship and how it can make a positive impact on their lives.

Kristel Koukoua

Kristel Koukoua taught for 13 years in a brick-and-mortar schools before transitioning to teaching online. She explains, “I really though that virtual teaching would be so isolated and very difficult to connect in a meaningful way with students thousands of miles away from me over a screen, but I really found the opposite to be true.

“I found that it is much easier to collaborate with colleagues who have amazing diversity in their experiences. People are sharing all the time. Students who would never speak up in the classroom are sending me messages and raising their digital hand telling me when they need help. They’re sharing their creativity. That has been super rewarding.”

James Riley

James Riley has had amazing experiences with his students at Proximity Learning. Two students even medaled at the district-wide academic decathlon in economics. Those students made a huge impact on their whole class because everyone was so proud of their hard work. Mr. Riley also prepares students for life after graduation. He mindfully builds his lessons around practical personal finance skills his students will need like how to select car insurance and how to secure a mortgage.

Jennifer Johnson

Synchronous teacher Jennifer Johnson throws her classes holiday parties every year. She mails them a box of activities and treats, so they have a fun way to review the curriculum. She believes in interactive learning and isn’t afraid to get the students up out of their seats. This year, she hosted a Romeo and Juliet feast catered by a restaurant, complete with costumes. She truly cares about the impact she makes in her students’ lives. “I am blessed that I get to be a part of many people’s journeys.”

Anna Deats

Anna Deats simply loves being a teacher and seeing her students succeed. During office hours, she tutors students on sight words and word families. “When I sit there one on one with a student and they read a sentence, it is amazing knowing that things are coming together and they are reading! It is oen of the best experiences.”

Mary Elissa Thomas

Mary Thomas loves teaching with Proximity Learning because she makes connections with students across the country. Although she lives in Kentucky, she teaches many students in New Jersey so she has learned just as much from them as they have from her. Ms. Thomas actively seeks teacher professional development because she is a lifelong learner - and of course her students appreciate that she has her own homework to complete!
