Teacher shortage in New Jersey

New Jersey has teacher vacancies in several essential subjects. Students are facing fewer and fewer opportunities for personalized learning and early interventions. The New Jersey Education report highlights that following the expiration of ESSR funds, schools are predicted to need to lay off 250,000 teachers nationwide. Despite having one of the least severe teacher shortages, even New Jersey is not free of the effects of the teacher shortage.  Ultimately, the most recent teacher shortage report shows 196 teacher vacancies plus 2.937 under-qualified teachers in New Jersey during the 2021-22 school year.

Some short-term solutions have been raised. "Fearing a potential teacher shortage this fall, two New Jersey lawmakers want to allow retired educators in ‘critical need’ subject areas to go back to work while still collecting their pension." This is unsustainable as the teacher shortage grows and retirees are unwilling to return.

Teacher Shortage reports claim, "Based on news and state reports, we estimate that there are at least 55,000 vacant teacher positions in the United States."
